Information Road Signs Namibian Learners Licence Book
Essential Information Signs for the Namibian NaTIS Test
In the Namibian Learners Licence curriculum, Information Signs play a vital role in driver guidance and safety. Unlike Regulatory signs (which are the law) or Warning signs (which alert you to hazards), Information Signs are designed to help you navigate, providing directions, distances, and location details for essential services.
While Information Signs are generally considered “secondary” to regulatory commands, failing to understand them can lead to dangerous situations… such as driving into a dead-end street or missing a critical freeway exit. In the official NaTIS exam, you will be tested on your ability to recognize these rectangular signs and understand the specific instructions they provide, such as toll tariffs and traffic signal coordination. These notes cover the most frequently tested information signs in Namibia to ensure you are fully prepared for your theory test.

The Anatomy of an Information Sign
Most Information signs in Namibia are rectangular and utilize specific color-coding to convey their message quickly:
- Blue/Green Rectangles: General guidance about routes, locations, and upcoming services like bus stops.
- Brown Signs: Usually reserved for tourism information, such as information centers or national parks.
- Supplementary Plates: These are small, additional signs placed below main signs to provide specific distances or recommended speeds (e.g., advising a safe speed for a curve even if the legal limit is higher).
Freeway Awareness: The Countdown Signs
A common area where learners lose marks at NaTIS is the Countdown Signage. These are the white-and-blue bars found on highways. It is critical to remember that each diagonal bar represents 100 meters. A sign with three bars indicates 300m to an exit, requiring you to check your mirrors and prepare to move into the left-hand lane immediately.

Multi-phase traffic signals
The traffic lights do not change simply from red to green, but have more phases to allow vehicles to turn against oncoming traffic.
